We hope that most of the information you need can be found on our website. However, we are often asked other questions and hope the following may be helpful. If you can’t find the answer to your question anywhere in the information we provide, please do get in touch with us as we will be happy to help.

Q: Does the school have any special things or words that would be helpful to know?

A: Yes, all schools use terminology that can be unfamiliar, please see a brief glossary below:

  • Exeat – A weekend off
  • Prep – Homework
  • Study – Office/room to use in free lessons
  • Line – Morning assembly
  • Alumni/Foundation – Pupils or staff who have left the school
  • Prefects – Help senior teachers run the school
  • Scholars – Pupils with exceptional expertise in a subject/area
  • Michaelmas term: 1st term, September – December
  • Lent term: 2nd term, January – April
  • Summer term, 3rd term, April – July
  • Pre-prep, Nursery, Reception – Year 2
  • Lower Junior school, Year 3 – Year 5

Q: What do I call the Teaching and Business Service staff?

A: Male: Sir, Female: Ma’am

Q: Do the Sixth Formers wear a uniform?

A: No, smart business wear is required

Q: How do I chose my subjects?

A: Pick one subject from each block; our teaching staff are able to help with this and would welcome a conversation with you

Q: Can I change my subject choices?

A: Yes, in the first half term of the school year

Q: Does the school provide email accounts to pupils?

A: Yes, each pupil is provided with a school email address

Q: Is there Internet access in the school?

A: Yes

Q: Are pupils allowed laptop computers, mobile phones and tablets?

A: Yes, please see pupil handbook

Q: Can boarding pupils wear their own clothes?

A: Yes, in the evenings and at weekends

Q: Can boarding pupils go into Canterbury?

A: Yes, please see the boarding handbook

Q: Who does the laundry for boarding pupils?

A: The laundry fairies or you can access washing machines in the boarding accommodation

Q: How many boarding houses are there?

A: All boarders reside in main building as one community

Q: Who will I share a room with?

A: You will share with a pupil of a different nationality

Q: Is there Saturday School?

A: Yes, we offer a curriculum enhancement morning. Compulsory for boarder pupils and optional for day pupils

Q: Are there trips at the weekend for boarding pupils?

A: Yes, an extensive weekend programme is available

Q: Can I visit the school?

A: Yes, you can make an appointment through Admissions to view the school

Q: What is the process of application?

A: Academic reports, Registration, Visit/Interview and Entrance Examinations. Please see Admissions Procedure

Q: Do you offer taster days?

A: Yes, after a pupil is registered

Q: How many terms are there in the school year?

A: 3 terms

Q: When do I pay fees?

A: Termly, on or before the first day of term

Q: How many pupils are in a class?

A: 12-18 pupils per class

Q: When can my child join?

A: We offer a rolling admission process and accept in-year admissions if there is a space in the year group

Q: Do you offer Scholarships?

A: Yes, please see Scholarship brochure

Q: Do you offer Bursaries?

A: Yes, means tested bursaries are available and can be applied for after a place at St Edmund’s has been offered

Q: Do you offer AEN support?

A: Yes, we have a Learning Enhancement department

Q: Do all pupils have their own room?

A: Most boarding bedrooms are doubles

Q: Can pupils stay at school during exeat weekends?

A: Yes

Q: Can pupils stay at school during holidays?

A: No

Q: Are meals / tuition included in the fees?

A: Yes, St Edmund’s offers an all-inclusive fee. Additional items include uniform, music lessons, EAL lessons and non-educational trips

Q: Can you cater for special diets?

A: Yes, our catering staff provide a wide variety of nutritious meals and can cater for all diets

Q: How does the school communicate with St Edmund’s parents?

A: Via My School Portal

Q: Who looks after pupils when they first join the school?

A: We operate a pupil buddy system as well as Housemaster’s, tutors, pastoral team and boarding staff

Q: Which academic house will my child join?

A: We have four houses and the Deputy Head allocates the houses to new pupils. This is normally done at the beginning of the Summer break and you will receive an email followed by a letter from the Housemaster

Q: What is the nearest train station?

A: Canterbury West

Q: Do you run a local bus service?

A: Yes

Q: What is the nearest Airport?

A: Gatwick Airport

Q: Do you offer transfers to and from the airport?

A: We can help you or your child arrange this with a reputable local chauffer service

Q: Do all boarders need a Guardian?

A: Yes, International boarding pupils need an educational guardian and UK boarding pupils need an emergency contact. Both must be situated within 2 hours of the school and be aged 25 or over

Applicant FAQs

Q: How do I create a new online account to submit an application form?

A: Go to https://stedmunds.heiapply.com/application/register and complete the form, keeping note of the email address and password that you used.

Q: How do I log in to my account?

A: Go to https://stedmunds.heiapply.com/application/login and enter the email address and password with which you registered your account..

Q: What if I forget my password?

A: Use the forgotten password feature https://stedmunds.heiapply.com/application/forgot. We will identify you and send the password securely to your registered email address, or give you access to reset your password.

Q: Can I take my time to complete the application form?

A: Yes. You can save each section and come back to it at a later date. If you forget your password, follow the forgotten password steps above. Please note the page will 'time-out' if inactive for a period of time. Keep saving your application to ensure no data is lost.

Q: Can I edit after submitting my application form?

A: No. Once you have submitted your form we review the information that you have provided. We may ask you for more information, but you can't edit your application.

Q: Can I track my application after submitting?

A: Yes, just log in and your application status will be on the right.

Q: I have submitted my application. What happens next?

A: You will receive an acknowledgement email once we receive it and your application will be assigned to a panel of three experienced reviewers who will carefully consider your application. We will aim to get back to you as quickly as possible.

Q: Can I contact someone about my application?

A: Yes, if you have any questions during the admissions process please get in touch with us via the Communication Inbox that you see when you login.
